The Ministry of Too Many Fish

Jesus knew how to make a scene, didn’t He?

He’s sitting in Peter’s boat, just finished with teaching a crowd on the beach, when He decides to have a bit of fun with the fishermen. I know He had a greater purpose here, but I’m betting He also had a twinkle in His eye.

Even though they’d just come in from an unsuccessful night of fishing, Jesus said, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish” (Luke 5:4, NLT). This may have been a solid stalling tactic to force the beach crowd to clear—but He also had plans for Peter and the others.

Peter replies: “Master, we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”

And then, so many fish jumped in that their nets broke. His abundance almost sunk their boat. Like I said—Jesus knows how to make a scene.
